Land Minister Mizanur Rahman Minu has said that BNP founder and former President Ziaur Rahman pioneered a production-oriented political culture and laid the foundation for a new era of development in Bangladesh.

He made the remarks while addressing a commemorative programme marking the 45th death anniversary of Ziaur Rahman at the Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP office in Malopara on Saturday (May 30).

The programme, organised by Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP and its associate bodies, began with the national and party flags flown at half-mast and black flags hoisted in observance of the day. Party leaders and activists also wore black badges as a mark of respect.

Speaking as the chief guest, Minu described Ziaur Rahman as a pivotal figure in safeguarding Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty and democracy during a critical period in the nation’s history.

“Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman united the nation through courageous leadership and introduced a development-oriented, production-based political philosophy that transformed the country’s direction,” he said. “His ideals and contributions continue to inspire nationalist forces across generations.”

The minister said Zia envisioned a self-reliant, prosperous and democratic Bangladesh, adding that efforts to realise that vision are continuing under the leadership of BNP Acting Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

“We must remain united in upholding Zia’s ideals and work collectively to strengthen democracy and accelerate national development,” he added.

The event was chaired by Rajshahi Metropolitan BNP President Mamun Or Rashid Mamun.

Among those present were Rajshahi City Corporation Administrator and BNP General Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman Riton, Rajshahi District Council Administrator and former BNP convener Advocate Ershad Ali (Isha), along with senior party leaders and representatives from various BNP affiliate organisations.

The programme concluded with special prayers seeking eternal peace for Ziaur Rahman and deceased members of his family.

The observance was part of BNP’s nationwide programmes commemorating the 45th anniversary of the former president’s death, with party leaders highlighting his political legacy and contributions to Bangladesh’s development and democratic journey.
