1,129 more Rohingya arrived in Bangladesh in two months: UNHCR
The influx of new Rohingyas into Bangladesh continues. From December 2024 to February 28 this year, the number of newly registered Rohingyas in Bangladesh stood at 1,44,456. This is 1,129 more than January, according to the UN refugee agency UNHCR.
The information was published in the agency's monthly report on Monday, March 16.
According to the report, a total of 11,84,864 Rohingyas are currently residing in various camps across the country.
UNHCR stated that Rohingyas are entering Bangladesh seeking safety due to ongoing violence and persecution in Rakhine State. As of February 28, the agency has completed biometric registration of 10,40,408 Rohingyas who have been displaced from Myanmar at various times since 1990 and taken shelter in Bangladesh.
Among them, 39,502 Rohingyas came to Bangladesh after 1990, and 10,906 came after 2017.
The report further stated that due to the escalating conflict in Rakhine State, a new influx of refugees has been seen since 2024. As a result, a large wave of new arrivals was identified in the camps in late 2024, and their biometric identification process is currently ongoing.
UNHCR said nearly 78 per cent of the Rohingyas in the camps are women and children. Additionally, about 12 per cent of the refugees are persons with disabilities, single parents, seriously ill, unaccompanied minors or at-risk elderly individuals who require special legal and humanitarian protection.
