11-party alliance names 13 candidates for reserved women's seats
The 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has finalised its nominees for the reserved women's seats in the 13th National Parliament, fielding 13 candidates in proportion to the number of parliamentary seats it won. Nomination papers will be submitted to the Election Commission on Tuesday, April 21.
The list was announced by Dr A H M Hamidur Rahman Azad, coordinator of the alliance, at an event at the Jamaat office in Magbazar on Monday evening, April 20.
Jamaat will send eight women to parliament, while the National Citizen Party (NCP) will send two. Additionally, one nominee each will come from the Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (JAGPA), Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis, and the family of a July Shaheed.
Notable among the nominees is Rokeya Begum, mother of six-year-old Zabeer Ibrahim, who was killed by police gunfire in Uttara on August 5, 2024. The alliance considers her nomination a sensitive and historic decision.
The 11-party alliance won 77 seats in the February 12 parliamentary election. Out of 50 reserved women's seats, the Jamaat-led alliance is entitled to 13 seats. The BNP alliance will nominate candidates for 36 seats and independent candidates for one seat.
According to the Election Commission schedule, the election for reserved women's seats will be held on May 12.
