12 killed by lightning strikes in seven districts

At least 12 people have been killed by lightning strikes accompanied by Kalbaishakhi storms in seven districts across the country. The deaths occurred at various times from morning to evening on Wednesday, April 29.

Patuakhali
Four people died in lightning strikes in Patuakhali. Saourav Majumdar, 22, died while tying up cattle in a field in Char Ganga village of Rangabali upazila around 9:00 am. Zahir Uddin, 28, was killed while working in a cornfield in Tarikata village of Kalapara upazila around 1:00 pm. Setara Begum, 55, died while taking her cow for grazing in Purba Chakamaiya village of Kalapara upazila around 2:00 pm. Khalek Hawlader, 55, was killed while bringing cows from a field in Santipur village at the same time. At least 50 cows have also reportedly died from lightning strikes across the district in the past two days.

Jamalpur
Two people died in Islampur upazila of Jamalpur. Shamim Mia, 37, died around 6:00 am while fishing in a river at Marakandi village in Gaibandha union. Sagar Islam, 18, was killed around 9:00 am while working on road construction in Indullamari village of Sapdhari union.

Barguna
Two people died in lightning strikes in Barguna. Fisherman Al-Amin was killed around noon in the Padma area of Sadar union, Patharghata upazila. Farmer Nurjamal died around noon in the Pujakhala area of Amtali upazila. The Amtali upazila executive officer later handed over Tk 25,000 in cash to the victim's family.

Mymensingh
Saddam Hossain, 32, died while fishing in the Ransa river in Gaborgati village of Galagaon union, Tarakanda upazila, Mymensingh, around 8:00 am.

Bagerhat
Day labourer Robin Hawlader, 53, died while bringing a cow from a field in Sarkardanga village of Sadar upazila, Bagerhat, in the afternoon.

Rangpur
Housewife Sahera Begum, 40, died while collecting firewood for cooking in Kazipara village of Sayer union, Taraganj upazila, Rangpur, around noon.

Rajbari
Sumon Mondol, 35, died while going to the market with his daughter on his lap in Mojjatkhola village of Mizanpur union, Sadar upazila, Rajbari, around 6:45 am. His daughter Safia survived with minor injuries after being thrown from his lap by the strike.

Additionally, Rajib Sheikh, 32, was killed by lightning while fishing in the Kirtinasha river in Naria upazila, Shariatpur. Most of the deceased were farmers, fishermen and day labourers who lost their lives while working in open fields or tending to livestock.
