13th parliamentary polls competitive, credible: EU Election Observer Chief
Chief Observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) Ivars Ijabs has described Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliamentary Election as highly competitive and conducted in accordance with the rule of law.
Speaking on Saturday (February 14) at a press conference at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka, Ijabs said EU observers monitored 805 polling stations and found the election credible, with the Election Commission acting transparently. He noted, however, that derogatory remarks against women were observed.
He praised the professionalism of the Election Commission and said candidates were able to campaign freely and engage with voters.
Expressing concern over low participation by women candidates, Ijabs said it reflects a lack of political will for women’s empowerment.
The EU observer chief also highlighted digital harassment against women, including character assassination and sexualized abuse, noting such behaviour is unacceptable in a democratic process. Condolences were extended to affected families.
On the post-election political environment, Ijabs commended political parties for peacefully accepting both victory and defeat, calling it highly commendable.
