150,000 Rohingyas have entered Bangladesh in 16 months
Due to violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state, around 150,000 new Rohingyas have crossed the border into Bangladesh in the last 16 months.
The UN refugee agency UNHCR reported this information on Wednesday (May 13).
The agency said that 149,769 Rohingyas have been registered as having entered Bangladesh from December 2024 to March 31, 2026. Of these, 2,780 were registered as new arrivals last month.
A total of 1,194,123 Rohingyas have been identified in camps in Bangladesh. Of tgem, 78 percent are women and children, while 12 percent are people with disabilities.
The UN refugee agency says that thousands of people have been killed in violence and torture in Myanmar's Rakhine state since 2024, as a result of which the Rohingyas are seeking safety in Bangladesh. As of April 30, UNHCR has registered 1,044,354 Rohingya who were displaced from Myanmar between 1990 and 2017. Of these, 39,691 arrived after 1990 and 1,046,663 arrived after 2017.
The report says that new refugees have continued to seek safety in Bangladesh since 2024 due to the escalating conflict in Rakhine State. As a result, a wave of new arrivals was identified in the camps in late 2024 and their biometric identification is underway.
