A total of 153 police officers have been promoted just ahead of the national election. They were promoted from the rank of sub-inspector to inspector through three separate gazettes signed by Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam on Sunday, February 9, though the matter became public on Monday. According to the gazettes, 100 officers were promoted from unarmed sub-inspector to unarmed inspector, while 47 officers were promoted from armed sub-inspector to armed inspector. In addition, six officers were promoted from the rank of police sergeant to inspector of police, city and traffic. The promotions come just days before the 13th national parliamentary election and referendum scheduled for February 12, prompting public discussion.

নির্বাচনের আগমুহূর্তে পুলিশের ১৫৩ কর্মকর্তাকে পদোন্নতি দেওয়া হয়েছে। সাব-ইন্সপেক্টর (এসআই) পদ থেকে ইন্সপেক্টর পদে উন্নীত হয়েছেন তারা। রোববার (৯ ফেব্রুয়ারি) পুলিশ মহাপরিদর্শক (আইজিপি) বাহারুল আলমের স্বাক্ষরিত তিনটি পৃথক প্রজ্ঞাপনের মাধ্যমে এই পদোন্নতি দেওয়া হয়। তবে বিষয়টি প্রকাশ্যে আসে আজ। প্রজ্ঞাপন অনুযায়ী, সাব-ইন্সপেক্টর অব পুলিশ (নিরস্ত্র) থেকে ইন্সপেক্টর অব পুলিশে (নিরস্ত্র) পদোন্নতি পেয়েছেন ১০০ জন কর্মকর্তা। এ ছাড়া সাব-ইন্সপেক্টর অব পুলিশ (সশস্ত্র) থেকে ইন্সপেক্টর অব পুলিশে (সশস্ত্র) পদোন্নতি পেয়েছেন ৪৭ জন। অন্যদিকে, পুলিশ সার্জেন্ট পদ থেকে ইন্সপেক্টর অব পুলিশ (শহর ও যানবাহন) পদে পদোন্নতি পেয়েছেন ৬ জন কর্মকর্তা। উল্লেখ্য, আগামী ১২ ফেব্রুয়ারি ত্রয়োদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচন ও গণভোট অনুষ্ঠিত হওয়ার কথা রয়েছে। নির্বাচনের ঠিক আগেই এই পদোন্নতির সিদ্ধান্ত কার্যকর হওয়ায় বিষয়টি নিয়ে আলোচনা সৃষ্টি হয়েছে।
