Citizens of Bangladesh aged 16 or 17 can now apply for the National Identity (NID) card, according to the Election Commission (EC). Once they turn 18, their names will be automatically included in the voter list, it said. The announcement came through a circular issued by the NID Registration Sub-division of the EC Secretariat under Section 5 of the National Identity Registration Act, 2010 (revised in 2013). The order, signed by Khan Abi Shahanur Khan, Director (Registration and Expatriates) of the National Identity Registration Division, has been circulated to all regional, district, and upazila election officers. The order is to take effect immediately, it added.

বাংলাদেশে বসবাসরত ১৬ বা ১৭ বছর বয়সী নাগরিকরা এবার জাতীয় পরিচয়পত্র (এনআইডি) নিতে নিবন্ধন আবেদন করতে পারবে। নির্বাচন কমিশন (ইসি) জানিয়েছে, বয়স ১৮ বছর পূর্ণ হলে স্বয়ংক্রিয়ভাবে তাদের নাম ভোটার তালিকায় অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা হবে। রোববার (২২ ফেব্রুয়ারি) নির্বাচন কমিশন সচিবালয়ের জাতীয় পরিচয় নিবন্ধন অনুবিভাগের একটি পরিপত্রে এই তথ্য জানানো হয়েছে। পরিপত্রে বলা হয়েছে, জাতীয় পরিচয় নিবন্ধন আইন, ২০১০ (২০১৩ সালে সংশোধিত) এর ধারা ৫ অনুযায়ী, আবেদনকারীর বয়স ১৬ বা ১৭ হলে তারা নিবন্ধনের জন্য আবেদন করতে পারবেন। জাতীয় পরিচয় নিবন্ধন অনুবিভাগের পরিচালক (নিবন্ধন ও প্রবাসী) খান আবি শাহানুর খান স্বাক্ষরিত আদেশে সব আঞ্চলিক, জেলা ও উপজেলা নির্বাচন কর্মকর্তাদের অবহিত করে তা অবিলম্বে কার্যকর করার নির্দেশ দেওয়া হয়েছে।
