17 arrested over attacks on Prothom Alo, Daily Star: DMP

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 17 individuals in connection with attacks on the offices of Prothom Alo, The Daily Star, and two cultural organisations, police said Monday (December 22).

So far, 31 suspects have been identified.

DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S N Md. Nazrul Islam told a press briefing that the attacks occurred late Thursday night at Prothom Alo’s Karwan Bazar office, involving vandalism, looting, and arson.

He added that while Prothom Alo has already filed a case, The Daily Star’s complaint is still being processed as the extent of damages is being assessed.

Of the 17 arrested, 13 were taken into custody by local police, three by the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit, and one by the Detective Branch.

Police said operations to apprehend further suspects are ongoing.
