1,939 MW load-shedding forecast during evening peak hour on Sunday

The power crisis across the country has intensified amid scorching heat, with disruptions in electricity supply causing immense suffering for the public. According to a forecast by Power Grid Bangladesh PLC on Sunday, August 30, a total of 1,939 megawatts of load-shedding may occur in various regions during the evening peak hours.

An analysis of Power Grid Bangladesh's data on Sunday afternoon shows that the Dhaka zone is expected to face the highest load-shedding during the evening peak, with up to 569 MW, though this is down from Saturday's forecast of 698 MW.

According to the forecast, the Mymensingh and Khulna zones may each experience 250 MW of power shortages during the evening peak. Additionally, Rajshahi and Rangpur zones may face 200 MW each, while Chattogram and Cumilla zones are expected to see 150 MW each.

Meanwhile, Sylhet zone may have 100 MW and Barisal zone 70 MW of load-shedding, showing significant regional variation in power deficits, with Barisal expected to face the least.

Power sector officials said the rising demand—driven by increased use of air conditioners, fans and other electrical appliances amid intense heat—has put pressure on the generation and supply system, making load-shedding necessary to balance demand and supply.

In total, load-shedding of approximately 1,939 MW may be required during the peak demand period on Sunday evening, raising concerns of further hardship for residents across the country, including the capital. The power sector has experienced severe supply deficits throughout August, with daily load shedding repeatedly exceeding 2,000 MW.
