Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has said that two police personnel detained by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along the Shashidal border in Brahmanpara upazila of Cumilla are safe and unharmed.

BGB Director Lieutenant Colonel Md Mahbub Murshed Rahman disclosed the information in response to journalists’ questions at a press conference held at the BGB headquarters in Pilkhana, Dhaka, at 11:30am on Friday.

He said formal communication had been established with the BSF to secure the early return of the two police personnel — an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and a constable — detained from the Shashidal border area in Brahmanpara upazila of Cumilla.

“We expect to get the two police personnel back very soon. Preparations are under way. They are unharmed and have not encountered any problems,” he said.

The BGB official said such situations could arise while personnel were performing their duties. Although the incident was undesirable, he added, it was not unusual.

He noted that the area was characterised by hills and dense forests. The incident occurred along the Shashidal border under Brahmanpara Police Station in Cumilla.

The BGB is providing all possible assistance to secure the return of the two police personnel, Rahman said, expressing optimism that the handover process between the two countries would be completed soon.

Earlier, around 10:30pm on Thursday, the BSF detained an ASI and a constable from the Ashabari border area in Brahmanpara upazila.

The detained police personnel have been identified as ASI Imran and Constable Rohit.
