20 JU students fined Tk615,000 for ragging

Jahangirnagar University (JU) administration has fined 20 students from the departments of Physics and History a total of Tk 615,000 over two separate incidents of ragging. The students have been barred from taking ongoing, term-final and scheduled future examinations until they pay the fines.

The information was disclosed in two separate office orders signed by the university’s acting Registrar, Dr A.B.M. Azizur Rahman, on Wednesday. The disciplinary measures were taken in accordance with a decision made at a special Syndicate meeting held on September 13.

According to the office order, several students from the Physics Department’s 2024-25 academic session allegedly ragged students from the 2025-26 session of the same department between 10pm and 3am on July 20 beside the western side of Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Haque Hall, known as Monpura. The allegations included verbal abuse, harassment and forcing the students to perform sit-ups while holding their ears.

Eight Physics students were fined between Tk 35,000 and Tk 50,000 each over the incident. Md Zahid Hasan, Md Fazle Hasan Fahad, Syed Sakib Ahmed Ratul and Md Al-Amin Hossain were each fined Tk 50,000. Md Mahmudul Amin Siam and Md Mostafizur Rahman Mizu were each fined Tk 45,000, while Md Faisal Ahmed was fined Tk 40,000 and Md Mahmudul Hasan Khan Akib Tk 35,000. The total fine in the case amounts to Tk 365,000.

In another incident, several students from the History Department’s 2024-25 academic session were accused of ragging 13 students from the 2025-26 session between 11pm and 2am on July 3. According to the office order, the students were allegedly verbally abused, forced to hold their ears and subjected to various forms of harassment on the university school and college grounds under the pretext of “teaching them manners.”

Twelve History students were fined between Tk 20,000 and Tk 30,000 each over the incident. Md Abu Abtahi Anik was fined Tk 30,000, while Nasim Uddin Majumder, Md Mahfuzur Rahman Anto, Abdullah Mahdi, Shubhashish Ray Pranto, Md Raihan Khan, Md Naimul Hasan, Md Isfaq Hadi, Naim Ahmed Sajib, Kartik Chandra Ray, Kazi Shah Jamshed Alam Nabil and Saifullah Mansur Anan were each fined Tk 20,000. The total fine in this case is Tk 250,000.

The students were punished under Section 3(2)(d) of the university’s “Ordinance on Discipline for Students, 2018.” The office orders state that the students will not be allowed to sit for ongoing examinations, term-final examinations or any other scheduled examinations until the fines are paid.

The orders also warned that stricter disciplinary action would be taken if the students became involved in similar offences in the future.

Several attempts were made to contact the university’s acting Registrar, Dr A.B.M. Azizur Rahman, by phone for comment, but he did not respond.
