25 new explosive detectors at Shahjalal International Airport

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has added 25 new explosive trace detectors to modernise and strengthen security at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. A total of 44 officials and employees of the airport security branch have been trained to operate the equipment.

The CAAB confirmed the information through a press release on Monday, September 7.

The press release stated that a local training programme on operating the newly added NUCTECH TR2000DC model explosive detectors was organised. Experts from the manufacturer conducted the training.

The 44 officials and employees who participated in the training were given the necessary knowledge and practical skills on the correct use of the equipment, sample collection, detection procedures, result analysis and safe handling.

CAAB sources said the NUCTECH TR2000DC is a modern trace detection technology capable of detecting extremely small traces of explosives and illicit narcotic substances. The device uses Ion Mobility Spectrometry technology and a non-radioactive ionisation source. It will play an important role in quickly detecting minute traces of suspicious substances on passenger baggage, cargo and various surfaces. Along with enhancing the effectiveness of security screening, potential security threats will also be rapidly identified.

CAAB Member (Security) Air Commodore Asif Iqbal told the media that the addition of this technology to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport's security system would result in significant progress in enhancing explosive and narcotics detection capability, improving the effectiveness of security screening and rapidly identifying potential security threats. At the same time, it will complement the existing security system and further strengthen the airport's multi-layered security arrangement.

CAAB said proper training of the personnel is crucial to ensure maximum effectiveness of modern security equipment. Therefore, emphasis is being placed on training, practical exercises and skill development. Through this, the personnel will be able to effectively use the equipment following established procedures and security standards.

Following Shahjalal International Airport, similar training programmes will be organised in phases for the concerned personnel at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram, Osmani International Airport in Sylhet and Cox's Bazar International Airport.
