27 sent to jail after being arrested from JSD office

Twenty-seven people arrested from the office of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) in the GPO area of Gulistan in the capital have been shown arrested under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code and sent to jail.

The order was given by the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam on Sunday night, September 27, following an application by the investigating officer.

In a forwarding report submitted to the court, police said the accused created an unstable and chaotic situation inside JSD's central office by chanting 'Joy Bangla' slogans. Later, they were detained at 4:10pm on Saturday with the help of police officers and members present at the scene and local people.

It further said that during interrogation, the accused could not provide a satisfactory explanation as to why they had come to the scene. It is primarily believed that the accused may be involved in a cognisable offence.

The accused sent to jail are Md Didarul Alam Tuhin (50), Iman Ahmed Emon (45), Molla Md Shahjahan Siraj (38), Joy Sarkar (31), Md Miraj Ahmed (19), Md Miraj Maliha (39), Md Rabiul Islam (28), Milon Kumar Mahanta (49), Md Kausar Hossain (55), Sri Anjan Shil (50), Jalal Uddin Mandal (52), Abdul Latif (49), Shamim Ahmed (55), Ahammad Ahsan Habib (43), Md Sujan Ali (32), Md Tasikul Islam (37), Md Saifullah Sayek (42), Nayan Ali Sajidul Islam Tuhin (40), Tajul Islam (34), Niskar Samrat Hossain Talukder (43), Anwar Hossain (32), Md Alamgir Hossain (42), Md Al Amin Howlader (39), Md Tushar Ali (50), Md Rashidul Haque (44) and Mir Muktisur Rahman (51).

On that day, investigating officer Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Nazmul Islam of Paltan Model Police Station arrested the accused under Section 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code and brought them to court. At the same time, he applied to keep them in jail custody through the court in the interest of a proper investigation, verifying the correctness of the accused's names and addresses and unravelling the main mystery. They were kept in the court lockup around 7pm that day.

Later, lawyers for the accused applied for bail. However, the court kept the plea on file and fixed Monday for the hearing.

In preliminary interrogation, the detainees could not give any satisfactory or valid answer regarding the incident. It is primarily believed that the accused may be involved in a cognisable offence. Therefore, it is necessary to keep them in jail custody for a proper investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.

On Saturday afternoon, during a representatives' meeting, a group of people led by Juba Dal central leader Rabiul Islam Nayan took position in front of JSD's central office.

Nayan claimed that several people who participated in that meeting were involved in the politics of the banned Awami League. Later, police went to the scene and detained around 278 people from the JSD office.
