2-year jail for SK Sur's wife Suparna over failure to submit wealth statement

A court has sentenced Suparna Sur Chowdhury, wife of former Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor SK Sur Chowdhury, to two years in prison in a case filed over failure to submit a wealth statement. She has also been fined Tk 1 lakh, with an additional three months of imprisonment in default of the fine.

Dhaka Special Judge's Court-10 Judge Md Rabiul Islam delivered the verdict on Tuesday, September 15. The accused was produced before the court from jail during the verdict. Later, as per the court's order, she was sent back to jail with the conviction warrant.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Shah Md Nazmus Sakib confirmed the matter. He said that after the completion of the trial proceedings in the case filed by the ACC, the court found Suparna Sur Chowdhury guilty and handed down the sentence.

According to the case documents, following allegations of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income, an order was issued to submit detailed information on movable and immovable assets, liabilities and sources of income held in the names of Suparna Sur Chowdhury, her husband SK Sur, and dependent individuals or in benami names.

On October 27, 2024, Suparna Sur received the order to submit the wealth statement and the prescribed form under her own signature. However, she did not submit the wealth statement within the stipulated 21 working days as per the law. Later, on December 23, 2024, ACC Deputy Director Nazmul Hossain filed a case under Section 26(2) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.

After investigating the case, ACC Deputy Assistant Director and investigating officer AM Taher submitted the charge sheet to the court on June 29, 2025. Subsequently, on February 3 this year, the court framed charges against Suparna. After the trial concluded with the testimony of five prosecution witnesses, the verdict in the case was delivered on Tuesday.
