At least three workers of the Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) were killed and two others seriously injured after being electrocuted while working on an underground power line in the capital’s Khilkhet area.

The incident took place in the Khapara area of Khilkhet on Sunday afternoon (March 15).

The deceased were identified as Rajib Hossain, 25, of Barguna Sadar; Razzak Mia, 57; and Farid Zaman, 64, of Bakshiganj in Jamalpur.

However, the identities of the two injured workers could not be confirmed immediately. The two injured are currently undergoing treatment at the same hospital.

According to sources, the victims were employees of an outsourcing contractor working for DESCO. After the accident, locals rescued them and rushed them to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared three of them dead.

Abdul Alim, officer-in-charge (OC) of Khilkhet Police Station, said, "The workers were lifting an underground electric cable with a crane near a temple in the Khapara area when the cable accidentally came into contact with another live power line.

"All five workers were electrocuted in the incident. The victims were taken to hospital immediately after the accident, but three of them could not be saved," he added.
