Up to 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant is expected to be added to the national grid by mid-August, Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam has said.

Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Sunday (April 26), the minister confirmed that fuel loading for the plant’s first unit will begin on Tuesday, marking a key milestone ahead of initial power generation.

He said that once the fuel loading process is completed, the plant will be able to supply an initial 300MW to the grid in August. The formal inauguration of power generation is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Outlining the long-term plan, the minister said the first unit is scheduled to reach its full capacity of 1,100MW by January 2027. Fuel loading for the second unit is planned for June the same year.

If progress continues as planned, both units combined are expected to contribute a total of 2,200MW to the national grid by September 2027, significantly boosting the country’s power generation capacity.
