32 arrested over banned Awami League rally in Gulshan

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested 32 people for allegedly taking part in a rally of the banned Awami League in the capital’s Gulshan area, police said on Saturday (September 12).

DMP Deputy Commissioner for Media and Public Relations Md Akter Hossain said a case had been filed on Friday against 118 people, including 80 to 100 unidentified suspects.

Police alleged that some of those involved directly participated in anti-state activities, including exploding cocktails.

The arrests followed a brief rally in Gulshan-3 on Friday morning.

Police said around 150 to 200 people gathered in the area and attempted to stage a procession.

As police moved to disperse the gathering, an inspector on duty in the Niketan area fired two blank rounds, according to Gulshan police chief Md Daud Hossain.

The protesters fled after leaving five live cocktails at the scene, while police detained two people carrying cocktails.

The two detainees were identified as Md Arafat, 20, and Ab Rahim, 49.

The rally lasted about 30 seconds, police said. Legal proceedings are underway, while the law-and-order situation in Gulshan remains normal.
