3-month detention order issued for Ataur Rahman Bikrampuri
Maulana Ataur Rahman Bikrampuri has been sent to jail under a three-month detention order following his arrest, police said.
Tongi East Police Station officer-in-charge Mehedi Hasan said on Wednesday, December 24, that Bikrampuri was sent to Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur in line with an order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, which authorised his detention for three months.
Earlier, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch said Ataur Rahman Bikrampuri had been arrested from Narsingdi.
He recently came into the spotlight following allegations of provocative remarks on social media after attacks on the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star. Several videos and comments linked to him circulated widely online.
His last live broadcast on social media was around 10:30 pm on December 22. Posting the video, he wrote in the caption, “Arrest me too in the Prothom Alo case.” In the nearly 39-minute live session, he made various comments about Prothom Alo and The Daily Star.
On his Facebook page, Ataur Rahman Bikrampuri identifies himself as the founder of the Prisoners Rights Movement, amir of Azadi Andolon Bangladesh, principal of Hunafa Islamic School, founder of Markazul Hunafa and chief executive of Hunafa Shop.
He also posted comments on Tuesday about NCP and some of its leaders, which sparked further discussion on social media.
