4 burned in Tongi chemical warehouse explosion

An explosion at a chemical warehouse in Tongi, Gazipur, left four people injured with severe burns on Monday afternoon. The injured, including three fire service personnel and one warehouse employee, were promptly rescued and taken to Dhaka’s Burn Unit for treatment.

The incident occurred around 4:30pm at a chemical storage facility used by a garment factory located in the Sahara Market area of Tongi BSCIC Industrial City.

According to local sources and the Fire Service, the explosion happened suddenly inside the warehouse, prompting those inside to flee immediately. Responding swiftly, a total of 7 units from the Tongi, Uttara, and Kurmitola Fire Services rushed to the scene and began firefighting efforts. During the operation, a chemical drum exploded, causing burns to one factory official and three firefighters.

Abdul Mannan, Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service Dhaka Zone 3, confirmed that while the fire is now largely under control, the exact cause of the blaze and the extent of the damage remain unclear. Investigations are ongoing.
