47 countries back Bangladesh at ILO Governing Body meeting

A total of 47 countries expressed full support for the government of Bangladesh during discussions at the 356th Governing Body session of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva.

Participating countries congratulated the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for assuming office through an election described as free, fair and credible, and pledged to strengthen cooperation.

Delegates from member states, regional groups and employers’ representatives praised Bangladesh’s ongoing labour sector reforms, including legal and administrative measures under a five-year roadmap adopted following a 2019 case over labour rights compliance.

While acknowledging progress, the European Union, the United States and Canada called for further steps to fully implement the roadmap.

The session concluded with a consensus to review the case again in March next year.
