481 killed in road accidents in August: Road Safety Foundation

A total of 481 people lost their lives on highways in August alone, with motorcycle accidents accounting for the highest number of deaths, according to a report by the Road Safety Foundation.

Data from the Road Safety Foundation shows 481 people were killed and 664 injured in 513 road accidents across the country in August. Compared to July, the average daily death toll in August rose by 15.65 percent.

Motorcycle riders, the most unprotected two-wheeler users, are bearing the brunt of road fatalities. In August, 176 people were killed in 183 motorcycle accidents, which is 15 percent higher than in July. Motorcycle accidents accounted for 36.59 percent of total road deaths.

According to the Road Safety Foundation, motorcycle riders are at the highest risk on roads, followed by pedestrians. In the same month, 102 pedestrians were killed on roads, accounting for 21.20 percent of total deaths. A total of 67 vehicle drivers and assistants were also killed.

According to transport expert Dr Shamsul Haque, when slow-moving vans, rickshaws and three-wheelers share the same lane with high-speed heavy vehicles and motorcycles on highways, it creates a major risk of collision.

Experts say that reducing accidents requires not just law enforcement but coordinated efforts, including updated policies, use of technology, development of road infrastructure and awareness among all road users, including drivers and pedestrians. At the same time, effective political will and consistent implementation by the government are essential.
