5 to die, 4 get life imprisonment in Dr. Nitai murder case
A Dhaka court has sentenced five individuals to death and four others to life imprisonment for the 2012 murder of Assistant Professor Narayan Chandra Dutta Nitai of Dhaka Chest Disease Hospital.
Judge Rezaul Karim of the 10th Special Judge’s Court passed the order on Sunday (August 17).
Among the accused, Kamrul Hasan Arun, Masum Mintu, Sayed Bepari, Bakul Mia, and Sayed Miji were sentenced to death, while Abul Kalam, Saidul, Faisal, and Masum received life imprisonment. Rafiqul Islam was given a separate life sentence.
Prosecutor Moazzem Hossain confirmed that all ten accused were present in court at the time of the verdict and were subsequently sent back to prison.
Dr. Nitai, an assistant professor and executive council member of the Bangladesh Medical Association, was a leader of the Awami League-affiliated Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad. He was killed at his residence in the hospital’s Mohakhali residential area on August 23, 2012. At the time, he was alone with his mother; his wife was away in Chattogram.
On the following day, Dr. Nitai’s father filed the case at Banani Police Station.
