5,000 metric tons of diesel arriving from India today
Five thousand metric tons of diesel are arriving in Bangladesh today from the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam, India. The fuel oil is expected to reach the country via pipeline on Tuesday, March 10.
General Manager of the Commerce and Operations Division of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), Muhammad Morshed Hossain Azad, confirmed the matter to the media.
According to BPC sources, the pumping process for sending this diesel from India has already begun. The government has taken this urgent initiative to maintain normal fuel oil stocks and ensure uninterrupted supply across the country. Officials concerned believe this import via pipeline will save transportation costs and time.
Earlier on Sunday, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury met with Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Pranay Verma to address the fuel situation. During the meeting, Bangladesh formally proposed an additional supply of 50,000 metric tons of diesel over the next four months through the Bangladesh-India pipeline. As part of this high-level government effort, the first consignment of 5,000 tons is arriving in the country.
The government has taken this urgent step to maintain normal fuel oil reserves and ensure uninterrupted supply nationwide.
Additionally, an existing agreement is in place to import 180,000 tons of diesel from India's Numaligarh Refinery until December this year.
