6 held over sugar smuggling scandal in Sylhet

Police arrested 2 BNP activists while hijacking a truck full of stolen sugar in Sylhet. The incident took place on Sunday (October 14) at midnight in the Sadipur Bridge area of ​​the Sylhet-Dhaka highway. During the time, police arrested 4 more people for being involved in the smuggling incident. Meanwhile, Sylhet Metropolitan BNP expelled 2 BNP leaders for being arrested in the incident.

This information was confirmed in a press release signed by Sylhet Metropolitan BNP President Miftah Siddiqui and General Secretary Emdad Hossain Chowdhury on Monday. Clear evidence of breach of party discipline and involvement in unethical activities are cited as grounds for dismissal.

The BNP leaders who were arrested and expelled for trying to steal sugar are Soleman Hossain Sumon (42), general secretary of 25th Ward Committee of the metropolis and son of late Chana Mia of ​​Dakshin Surma upazila and Abdul Mannan (43) general secretary of 26th Ward BNP, and son of late Dilu Mia of Sonali residential area of ​​Varthakhla.

The other four arrestees are Monir Ahmad (32), son of late Karam Ali of Malaitila, Bateshwar, Sylhet Sadar Upazila, Tofail Ahmed (26), son of Mumtaz Ali of Bagherkhal, Jaintapur, Shaheen Ahmad (25) and Nazrul Islam (42) son of Moin Uddin of Goainghat.

Osmaninagar Police Station OC (Investigation) Arafat Jahan Chowdhury said six people were arrested from Sadipur Bridge. During the time, a truck full of Indian sugar, two microbuses and two motorcycles were seized. Among them, four people were arrested for smuggling and two people were arrested for trying to hijack a shipment of sugar.

The arrested said that 250 sacks of Indian sugar were being transported by truck from Jaintapur. Four smugglers were following the truck in a black colored microbus behind them. On the way, a group of people tried to hijack the shipment of sugar. They chased the sugar truck with a microbus and two motorcycles. At that time, the police managed to arrest 6 people, but some others involved in the robbery escaped.
