A court has sent six leaders and activists of Awami League who were arrested for raising 'Joy Bangla' slogan after the Namaz-e-Janaza of former minister and one of the organizers of the Liberation War, Tofail Ahmed.

Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Fahmida Khandaker Anna passed the order rejecting the bail pleas of the arrestees on Tuesday.

According to court sources, the people sent to jail include former Jhalakathi District Chhatra League president Abdullah Al Masud (Madhu), Kaliganj Thana Chhatra League vice-president Swadhin Islam, Daulatpur Awami League activist Iftekhar Ahmed Sabuj, Patuakhali Jubo League member Khokon Faraji, and Monpura Thana Jubo League activist Maksudur Rahman Bablu.

The case's investigation officer, Mahmudur Rahman, requested the court to send them in jail.

On the other hand, the lawyers for the accused applied for bail, but the state opposed it. After the hearing, the court rejected the bail petition.

According to the case statement, about 200 leaders and activists of Awami League, Chhatra League and Jubo League were present at the funeral of Tofail Ahmed held at Taqwa Mosque in Dhanmondi on Monday evening. It is alleged that after the funeral, a group of people started a procession chanting 'Joy Bangla' and anti-government slogans while the body was being taken to a freezing vehicle.

Police claim that six people were arrested from the scene and the others left from there. In this incident, a case was filed at Dhanmondi Model Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act by Sub-Inspector (SI) Mithun Singh of the police station.

The case is currently under investigation. The charges against the accused cannot be considered proven until the court takes a final decision on the charges.
