68 incidents of political violence in September, 4 killed and 527 injured: Report
The Human Rights Support Society (HRSS), a human rights organisation, has reported that 68 incidents of violence took place in different parts of the country in September over political disputes, dominance and extortion. Four people were killed and at least 527 others were injured in the incidents.
The organisation disclosed the information in a press release on Saturday (October 3).
According to HRSS, it reviewed the situation in September based on reports published in 16 national media outlets and information collected through its own investigations.
According to the organisation, 70 incidents of political violence were recorded in August, leaving seven people dead and 536 injured. Compared with August, both the number of violent incidents and casualties declined somewhat in September.
The report said the highest number of incidents in September stemmed from internal disputes within the BNP. HRSS claimed that 35 such incidents left 340 people injured and one person dead.
In addition, 61 people were injured in seven clashes between the BNP and Jamaat. Six clashes between the BNP and Awami League left 42 people injured and one person dead.
During the same period, HRSS reported that three people were injured and one was killed in two clashes between Jamaat and the Awami League. Sixteen people were injured in three clashes between the BNP and NCP.
The report also said 15 people were injured in seven incidents of clashes between the BNP and other political parties. A further seven clashes involving different political parties left 50 people injured and one person dead.
According to HRSS, two of the four people killed in political violence in September were affiliated with the Awami League, one with the BNP and one with Jamaat-e-Islami.
The organisation also reported two clashes related to the upcoming local government elections, in which at least 20 people were injured.
The report further said that 12 separate attacks by miscreants on leaders and activists of political parties were documented in September. HRSS reported that a total of seven people, including five BNP members and one Jamaat member, were injured in these incidents.
