7 robbery gang members impersonating DB officers held
Seven individuals were held by Shahbagh Police Station of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) while preparing for a robbery in the capital’s Gulistan area, posing as members of the Detective Branch (DB). Police recovered a vehicle and various equipment used in the robbery.
The arrested individuals are: Md. Deen Islam alias Kawsar Ahmed (35), Md. Kamal Hawlader (35), Abdur Rahman Hawlader (37), Md. Mehedi Hasan alias Hasan (38), Md. Babul Hawlader (38), Md. Ramiz Talukdar (35), and Jannatul Ferdous (22).
According to Shahbagh Police sources, based on a tip-off, a raid was conducted around 9 p.m on Wednesday (September 3) near the Laguna stand on the south side of Golap Shah Mazar in Gulistan. As police arrived, the gang members attempted to flee, but seven were caught red-handed. However, 4–5 others managed to escape.
Items recovered during the raid include: a microbus, two DB jackets, two walkie-talkies, a fake police ID card, two handcuffs, two toy pistols, two pocket routers, six Android phones, six button phones, an expandable baton, and a laser light.
During initial interrogation, the arrested individuals admitted to being active members of an organized robbery gang. They targeted gold traders visiting the Tantibazar area and individuals withdrawing cash from banks, committing robberies by impersonating DB police.
According to police records, Md. Deen Islam alias Kawsar Ahmed has 10 robbery cases against him, Abdur Rahman Hawlader has 3, Md. Mehedi Hasan alias Hasan has 4, Md. Babul Hawlader has 2, and Md. Ramiz Talukdar has 4.
A case has been filed at Shahbagh Police Station. Legal proceedings are underway against the arrested individuals, and efforts to apprehend the fugitives continue.
