72 killed in lightning strikes across country in 4 months
The number of deaths due to lightning in the country has increased alarmingly. A total of 72 people have died in the first four months of this year, according to the voluntary organization Save the Society and Thunderstorm Awareness Forum (SSTF). Most of the deceased are farmers.
In a statement, the organization said that deaths due to lightning have been increasing in recent times, which is especially dangerous for farmers working in the fields on Saturday (May 2).
It was also mentioned that 14 people died in a single day on April 26.
According to the organization, farmers are at the highest risk because they work in open fields. Various activities are being carried out to make them aware of this situation.
As part of this, a lightning awareness campaign was conducted among more than a hundred farmers in the Arial Beel area of Munshiganj district on Friday on the occasion of May Day. Various techniques to stay safe were also taught there.
The SSTF has called for farmers to follow three key guidelines to reduce risks and prevent loss of life during lightning strikes.
