81 factories remain open in Gazipur even during Eid holidays
Workers in Gazipur’s garment industrial area are celebrating Eid on a positive note this year, as factories have disbursed salaries and bonuses on time, allowing employees to head home for the festivities.
According to industrial police, for the first time in over 15 years, all factories have paid salaries and bonuses without any protests or road blockades.
However, to maintain production continuity, 81 factories will remain partially open during the Eid holidays.
Gazipur Industrial Area Police Superintendent Amjad Hossain said, “In the past decade and a half, workers often had to protest to receive pending wages and bonuses before Eid. This year, employees of nearly 2,834 BGMEA and BKMEA-affiliated factories can celebrate Eid with timely payments.”
Workers expressed relief and joy. Habibur Rahman said, “Salaries and bonuses have been paid across nearby factories as well, so we can celebrate Eid happily with our families.”
Partial operations will continue in spinning mills, ceramics factories, textile mills, and subcontracted units. Overall, 98 per cent of factories in Gazipur have disbursed salaries and 99 per cent have paid bonuses.
Industrial police added that machines cannot be shut down immediately after raw materials are loaded, which necessitates keeping some factories operational during the holiday.
