ACC raids Ziaul Ahsan's residence in Jalsiri

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has conducted a search operation at the residence of sacked Major General Ziaul Ahsan in the Jalsiri housing project in Rupganj, Narayanganj.

ACC Public Relations Department Assistant Director Tanjir Ahmed confirmed the matter . He said a team led by ACC Deputy Director Md Hafizul Islam conducted the raid on Monday morning at the Jalsiri residence in Rupganj . The team is currently preparing an inventory of the assets and valuables found in the house .

Ziaul Ahsan was shown arrested on January 7 this year in a case filed by the ACC over allegations of acquiring assets disproportionate to his known income . The case statement alleges that the former military officer abused his power to amass illegal assets worth approximately Tk 22 crore 27 lakh 78 thousand in his own name, deposited $55,000 exceeding the permissible limit, and conducted large-scale financial transactions through various bank accounts with the help of his wife, Nusrat Jahan . According to the ACC, there was an abnormal transaction of about Tk 120 crore in eight bank accounts in his wife's name . He is also accused of illegally investing about $13,50,000 in five-year bonds of Antigua and Barbuda .

Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, 2024, Ziaul Ahsan was dismissed from his post as Director General of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC) on August 6 . Later, on August 16, he was arrested from the capital's Khlkhet area in a murder case filed with New Market Police Station during the July-August mass uprising . He has been in jail since then .

The ACC officials said that the inventory of the eight-storey building in Rupganj includes all furniture, valuables, documents and other assets . The ACC's investigation found that Ziaul Ahsan owns an eight-storey building in Rupganj, a garden house, a one-storey house, and another under-construction eight-storey building in Barishal, and three flats in Dhaka's Mirpur and Uttara .
