A court has granted bail to an accused in a case filed over the death of headteacher Ranjila Parveen, who fell from a battery-powered rickshaw after snatchers pulled at her bag in front of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka.

Judge Ayesha Akhtar Mousumi of the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court in Dhaka passed the order on Sunday responding to a plea of the accused Md Rakib Hossain, 24.

Rakib's lawyer, Md Mehedi Hasan Majumder, confirmed the development.

Mehedi Hasan said the court granted Rakib bail until the police report is submitted in the case. The bail bond was set at Tk 5,000. The lawyer expressed hope that Rakib would be released from jail soon, as no other cases were pending against him.

Ranjila Parveen, 56, died on August 29 after falling onto the road when snatchers pulled at her bag near the South Plaza of the parliament complex in the early hours of the morning.

She was the headteacher of Bagbari Girls’ Government Primary School in Gabtali upazila of Bogura district. She had travelled to Dhaka with her husband for medical treatment.

The couple had arrived at Kalyanpur bus terminal early that morning and were travelling by battery-powered rickshaw to a hospital when two snatchers on a motorcycle targeted Ranjila’s bag in the parliament area. As they pulled at it, she was thrown from the rickshaw and suffered a severe head injury. She was later taken to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Ranjila’s husband, Abdul Matin, filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka.
