Action against MP Gazi Nazrul if letter received from parliament: EC Secretary

Election Commission (EC) Secretary Akhtar Ahmed has said action will be taken as per law against Member of Parliament for Satkhira-4 constituency Gazi Nazrul Islam if a letter is received from parliament. However, he said no letter has yet been received from parliament on the matter.

He made these remarks while speaking to journalists at his office in the Election Building on Monday, September 21.

MP Gazi Nazrul Islam has been shown arrested in a case of abetment of suicide of his second wife, Mariam Khatun. In the case filed by Mariam's father, police showed him arrested after informing the Speaker on Monday.

The EC Secretary said no letter has yet been received from parliament regarding MP Gazi Nazrul Islam. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has written to the Election Commission on the matter. However, he said, the commission has no scope to take action unless a letter is received from parliament as per the law.

Earlier, after a video involving Gazi Nazrul Islam's second wife, Mariam Khatun, spread on social media, Jamaat-e-Islami expelled him from the party. At the same time, the party wrote to the Speaker and the Election Commission to take steps to declare his MP post vacant.
