Ad-Din Hospital's licence cancelled but medical college to remain open: Health Minister
Although the licence of Ad-Din Medical College Hospital has been cancelled and its operations shut down following the deaths of six newborns, the academic activities of Ad-Din Women's Medical College will continue as usual, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain Bokul has said .
The minister was responding to questions from journalists at the International Mother Language Institute after a discussion marking World No Tobacco Day-2026, organised by the National Tobacco Control Cell of the Health Services Division, on Monday, June 15 .
"Due to inhumane service, we have taken this difficult decision. However, students of Ad-Din Medical College will be able to practise at other hospitals. They have other hospitals, and if necessary, they can be transferred there," the health minister said .
Earlier, on June 11, the government cancelled the licence of Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in Moghbazar over the deaths of six newborns. The hospital was ordered to transfer patients to other facilities within three days . However, the Directorate General of Health Education has confirmed that the academic activities of Ad-Din Women's Medical College will not be disrupted, and the college authorities have already been informed of this in an official letter .
The letter stated that students and interns may be attached to other hospitals as needed, ensuring that their academic studies and clinical training can continue .
The health ministry has also directed all government hospitals in Dhaka to provide appropriate treatment to patients referred from Ad-Din Hospital .
Health Minister Sakhawat reiterated that the government took this punitive action based on specific evidence of inhumane service and the deaths of the newborns .
Ad-Din Women's Medical College, established in 2008, is a private medical college for female students located in Maghbazar. It is affiliated with the University of Dhaka, and its MBBS degree is recognised by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council .
However, the private medical college is required to have an affiliated teaching hospital under Section 6 of the Private Medical College and Dental College Act, 2022. The Directorate General of Health Education has now directed the college to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with any general hospital to ensure clinical training for students and interns . They have been given three working days to inform the directorate of their chosen hospital.
