Admission to collage to be based on SSC results, not entrance exam

The Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee has proposed that admission to class XI for the current academic year be based on SSC and equivalent examination results, rather than entrance tests. If the Ministry of Education approves, applications will be accepted centrally online, as was the case last year.

Professor Syed Akhtaruzzaman, chairman of the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee and chairman of the Dhaka Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, said on Monday (August 3) that the draft admission policy for class XI has already been sent to the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Education Ministry.

He said no major changes are being made to the admission process this year. Admission to colleges will be confirmed based on the marks obtained in the SSC and equivalent examinations and the students' order of preference. The admission policy is expected to be issued before the results are published on August 10.

Earlier, following the announcement of the reinstatement of entrance examinations for school admissions, there was discussion about whether entrance tests would also be introduced for class XI. However, the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee's proposal has maintained the previous system.

The SSC and equivalent examination results will be published on August 10. The schedule for application and other activities for class XI admissions is also being revised due to the delayed result publication. The education board chairman said a final decision on this matter will be taken within this week.

There are over 26 lakh seats available in class XI across colleges and madrasas nationwide. On the other hand, over 18.57 lakh students participated in this year's SSC and equivalent examinations. As a result, a significant number of seats are likely to remain vacant again this year.

However, following court directives, church-run colleges such as Notre Dame College and Holy Cross College will continue to select students through their own admission tests.
