Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan sworn in as new Minister
Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan, Member of Parliament for Tangail-8 (Bashail-Sakhipur), has been sworn in as a minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on Thursday (March 12) at the National Parliament House.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office.
In the 13th National Parliament elections, Ahmed Azam Khan, contesting under the 'Dhaner Shish' (paddy sheaf) symbol, received 113,214 votes, defeating his nearest rival, independent candidate and industrialist Salauddin Alamgir, who ran on the 'Horin' (deer) symbol and secured 76,448 votes. Khan won by a margin of 36,766 votes.
Earlier on Thursday, the first session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad was held, during which Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed (Bir Bikram) was elected Speaker and Barrister Kaiser Kamal was elected Deputy Speaker. Both previously held ministerial posts in the current cabinet—Hafiz Uddin Ahmed as Minister for Liberation War Affairs and Kaiser Kamal as State Minister for Land.
Following their election to parliamentary leadership, their ministerial posts became vacant. Shortly after, the ruling BNP announced Ahmed Azam Khan as the new member of the cabinet, and he subsequently took the oath as minister.
However, he has not been assigned a ministerial portfolio yet.
