Akheri Chahar Shomba today

The country is observing Akheri Chahar Shomba, a day observed on the last Wednesday of the Islamic month of Safar.

All educational institutions across the country will remain closed today (August 12) on this occasion.

According to the annual holiday calendars of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education and the Ministry of Education, government and private schools, colleges, madrasas, technical institutions and universities will remain closed for the day.

The National University and all of its affiliated colleges are also closed today. Several universities, including Jahangirnagar University and Jagannath University, have issued separate notices announcing the holiday.

What is Akheri Chahar Shomba?
The term Akheri Chahar Shomba comes from Arabic and Persian words. Akheri means last, Chahar means four, and Shomba means Wednesday. The term therefore refers to the last Wednesday of Safar.

The day holds religious significance for many Muslims. Various religious programmes, including prayers, milad mahfils, sermons, zikr and special supplications, are being organised at mosques and religious institutions across the country.

However, Akheri Chahar Shomba is not a general public holiday. Government and private offices will therefore continue their regular activities today.
