Akhteruzzaman denied bail
Jamaat-e-Islami leader, former lawmaker and freedom fighter Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman has been denied bail in a case filed over obstructing government work and assaulting a security officer at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
On Monday (October 26), the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court rejected his bail petition after a hearing. The court had earlier turned down his bail plea in the same case on October 4. That day, he was produced before the court after a one-day remand, and his lawyer sought bail. After the hearing, the court rejected the petition and ordered him sent to jail.
According to the case statement, Akhtaruzzaman was arrested on October 2 on charges of creating disorder over luggage and trolley management at the airport, obstructing government work and physically assaulting a security officer on duty. The case was filed with Airport Police Station by airport security officer Md Shahriar Alam Sajib.
After the arrest, the investigation officer sought five days’ remand to interrogate him. After a hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir granted one day’s remand.
The allegations state that on October 1, 34 Jamaat-e-Islami representatives returned to Dhaka from Medina with their family members. Their flight landed at Shahjalal International Airport at 8:55am. After completing immigration formalities, the passengers went to the Belt No. 8 area to collect their luggage. There, allegations arose of disorder over luggage and trolley management and of obstructing government work.
