Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has said that what the Awami League carried out during the July 2024 uprising is rare in world history.

He made the remarks on Wednesday, January 7, after the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, handed over reports following the collection of DNA samples from 114 unidentified bodies buried in Rayerbazar, Dhaka, during the July mass uprising.

Muhammad Yunus said killing a country’s own citizens and burying them in mass graves is unimaginable in any civilised state. The barbaric acts carried out under the Awami League government are rare in world history, he added.

The chief adviser said the initiative to uncover the truth and restore the identities of the martyrs marks a significant step towards justice for the families of the missing and reflects the moral responsibility of the state.

He said the DNA identification process proves that truth cannot be suppressed forever. The names and identities of the victims will be restored, and their sacrifices will remain permanently recorded in the nation’s history.

Yunus added that the initiative is not merely a forensic exercise but a bold step towards wiping away the tears of families searching for their loved ones, restoring the humane face of the state and advancing justice. For those still waiting for news of missing family members, he said, the process offers hope that the truth will eventually come to light.

The CID has requested families whose members went missing while participating in the July–August mass uprising to contact its hotline number, 01320019999.
