Aminul Haque challenges election result
Aminul Haque, a candidate from the Dhaka-16 constituency, has filed a petition with the High Court challenging the results of the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
The petition is scheduled for hearing on Sunday, March 8, before a single High Court bench led by Md Zakir Hossain.
Former captain of the Bangladesh national football team, Aminul Haque, contested the election with the sheaf of paddy symbol. He lost to Md Abdul Baten, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate from the Dhaka-16 constituency, by a margin of 3,361 votes.
Abdul Baten received 88,828 votes in the election, while Aminul Haque received 85,467 votes.
Despite his electoral defeat, he has been appointed as the Minister of State for Youth and Sports (Technocrat) in the new BNP-led government.
Earlier, more than 15 candidates have filed petitions with the High Court challenging election results. The High Court has accepted the petitions for hearing and ordered the preservation of ballot papers and necessary equipment from the concerned constituencies.
According to Section 49 of the Representation of the People Order, an election tribunal has been constituted in the High Court to hear petitions against electoral irregularities.
The single bench led by Justice Md Zakir Hossain is hearing these petitions.
