Md. Aminul Islam has been appointed as the new Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

The development has been confirmed through a gazette notification issued Monday morning (February 23) by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

The notification, signed by the ministry’s solicitor Md. Manjurul Hossain, states that Aminul Islam will serve as Chief Prosecutor until further orders, and the previous appointment of Tajul Islam has been revoked.

Tajul Islam had held the position since September 5, 2024, appointed by the interim government at the rank of Attorney General.

Tajul Islam oversaw the reconstituted tribunal for the past year and a half. Under his leadership, 24 formal charges related to crimes against humanity during the July–August 2024 period were filed ahead of the general election. Trials for these cases are ongoing in Tribunal-1 and Tribunal-2, with three verdicts already delivered. Among the 26 convicted individuals are the Sheikh Hasina, ex-Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and several top police officials.

Several high-profile cases, including the killing of Abu Sayed during the July uprising, remain under trial, and a verdict for a Rampara human rights case is scheduled for March 4.

Additionally, the tribunal is handling enforced disappearance and torture cases from the Awami League government period, involving senior military officers such as Major General (retd.) Ziaul Ahsan and influential Awami League MPs and ministers accused of crimes against humanity.
