Amir Khasru gets Finance Ministry

BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has been made the Finance Minister under the party-led government.


BNP Media Cell has announced the portfolios of 25 ministers and 24 state ministers who took oath on Tuesday afternoon at the National Parliament.


Amir Khasru was born on February 20, 1950 in the Nazir Bari of North Kattali, Pahartali in the Chattogram District of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). His father, Mahmudunnabi Chowdhury, was a minister during the East Pakistan period and a member of the East Pakistan Legislative Assembly. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Chattogram College in 1969. He then studied accountancy in London, England.


Amir Khasru was elected as a Member of Parliament from Chittagong-8 thrice from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. First in 1991 which was a by-election and again in 1996 and again in 2001.


He is a businessman and former chairman and founder of Chattogram Stock Exchange, a former president of Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industries and the first president of Federation of South Asian Exchanges.


He was the former commerce minister in the BNP government from 2001 to 2004. He resigned in March from the cabinet.


On October 31, 2007, arrest warrants were issued against him on a corruption case filled by the Anti-Corruption Commission. He had fled Bangladesh during the crackdown on corruption by the Caretaker Government.


He was part of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party delegation to the Democracy, good governance and human rights in Bangladesh, held in July 2013 in London.
