Andaleeb Rahman Partho apologises after addressing Speaker by name in parliament
BNP MP Andaleeb Rahman Partho faced objections in parliament after addressing the Speaker by his name during a speech. Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal immediately pointed out the breach of parliamentary protocol, prompting Partho to express regret for his remarks.
The incident occurred on Saturday, June 27, during the general discussion on the proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, in the 16th sitting of the 13th National Parliament, with Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal presiding.
During his speech, Partho said, "If Hafiz Saheb were here, he would understand the matter, because he is from Bhola."
The Deputy Speaker immediately asked, "Who is Hafiz Saheb?"
Realising his mistake, Partho said, "Sorry, sorry, Speaker Saheb, I am sincerely sorry."
He then continued his speech, highlighting the development of his constituency, Bhola, where approximately 1.3 trillion cubic metres of gas reserves exist. He said Bhola deserves special attention, just as a family hires a separate tutor for a child who excels in mathematics, yet he has to visit various offices demanding hospitals, airports and bridges.
Partho praised several positive aspects of the budget, including support for 41 lakh families, tax cuts on assistive devices for disabled people, support for new entrepreneurs and price reductions for cancer, heart and eye medicines. He said the budget reflects a government of the people.
Criticising the previous government, he said there was a lack of good governance in the national revenue system for a long time, and corruption took place under state patronage, creating opportunities to loot the country's wealth.
Urging trust in the current government, Partho said no bank looting or major corruption with political patronage has surfaced in the last four months.
