Another Deputy Attorney General resigns

Deputy Attorney General Sadia Afrin Shapla has submitted her resignation citing personal reasons. She submitted the resignation letter addressed to the President at the Attorney General’s office today Wednesday.

With this, six law officers have submitted resignation letters within a span of two days.

Earlier on September 7, Additional Attorney General Muhammad Abdul Jabbar Bhuiya, Deputy Attorney Generals Sultana Akhtar Ruby and Mamun Chowdhury, and Assistant Attorney Generals Rohani Siddika and Projjol Chakma submitted their resignation letters.

Sadia Afrin Shapla said she submitted the resignation letter written to the President citing personal reasons to the administrative officer of the Attorney General’s office this morning.

After the current government came to power, 86 lawyers of the Supreme Court were appointed as deputy attorney general (DAG) and 180 lawyers as assistant attorney general (AAG) on July 30. A total of 266 persons were appointed to the posts of DAG and AAG. This appointment was given by cancelling the appointment orders of all deputy attorney generals and assistant attorney generals appointed at different times earlier. Sadia Afrin Shapla was among those appointed as DAG on July 30.

Earlier after the new appointments, a section of BNP-leaning lawyers who did not get appointment or were aspirants for the posts of deputy attorney general (DAG) and assistant attorney general (AAG) staged a protest in front of the Attorney General’s office on August 2. They held the protest rally under the banner of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum that day. They staged protests almost every day until September 1.
