Appeal hearing on Jamaat registration plea on Jan 21
The second day of hearing on the appeal against the High Court's verdict declaring Jamaat-e-Islami's registration illegal after its revival has ended.
The four-judge appeal bench led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed concluded the hearing on Tuesday (January 14) and set January 21 as the next date for hearing.
Lawyer Ehsan A Siddique was present at the hearing on behalf of Jamaat. He is accompanied by lawyer Shishir Monir.
Lawyer Touhidul Islam was present on behalf of the EC. Earlier, the hearing on the appeal began on December 3.
On November 19, 2023, the appeal case was dismissed (due to the absence of the lawyer). Then an application was filed for revival of the appeal. On October 22, the court pardoned the delay and restored the appeal for hearing. That is, it revived it.
Lawyers Ehsan Abdullah Siddique and Shishir Monir were in favor of the petition in court that day.
On November 4, 2008, Jamaat-e-Islami was granted temporary registration. The following year, 25 people including Syed Rezaul Haque Chandpuri, then Secretary General of Bangladesh Tariqat Federation, Munshi Abdul Latif, then Secretary General of Zaker Party, Maulana Ziaul Hasan, President of Sammilit Islami Jote, and others filed a writ challenging the validity of Jamaat's registration.
The writ petition named four people as respondents, including Jamaat's then Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami, Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid, and the Election Commission. They requested that Jamaat's registration be cancelled.
