Appellate Division upholds Barrister Suman’s bail in Mirpur Case
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh has upheld the bail granted to former independent MP Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Suman in a case filed over the anti-discrimination student movement in Mirpur.
At the same time, the court directed the High Court to dispose of the pending rule on the matter expeditiously.
A bench headed by Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam passed the order on Monday (May 11). Barrister Suman was represented in court by lawyer M. Liton Ahmed.
According to case documents, Suman was arrested from the Mirpur-6 area of Dhaka around 1:30am on October 21, 2024, by police. Shortly before his arrest, he posted on his verified Facebook account stating that he was going with the police and would face the court, requesting prayers.
He faces multiple cases filed in different police stations in Dhaka as well as in Habiganj district. In one of the Mirpur cases, the High Court earlier granted him bail and issued a rule.
The state later filed an appeal seeking a stay on the High Court order. After hearing the petition, the Appellate Division upheld the bail and instructed the High Court to dispose of the rule promptly.
Lawyers said the ruling ensures that Barrister Suman’s bail remains in force while the legal proceedings move toward faster resolution.
