Selina Hayat Ivy, former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation, has secured relief after the Appellate Division upheld her bail in five separate cases on Sunday (May 10).

The order was passed by the Appellate Division led by the Chief Justice, effectively removing legal barriers to her release, according to her lawyers.

Barrister Sara Hossain and Advocate Motahar Hossain Saju represented Ivy during the hearing.

Ivy was arrested on May 9 last year from her residence, Chunka Kutir, in the Deobhog area of Narayanganj city. Following her arrest, she was shown detained in multiple cases, including several murder cases filed with Fatullah Police Station.

The High Court had earlier granted her bail in five cases, but the orders were later stayed by the Appellate Division’s chamber court after the state filed appeals.

Among the cases are the killings of bus driver Abul Hossain Mizi, Abdur Rahman, Md. Yasin and Parvez. On March 5, the chamber court suspended the High Court’s bail order and referred the matter to the regular bench for hearing.

Later, on February 26, a High Court bench comprising Justice KM Jahid Sarwar Kajol and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher granted her bail again in the cases.

During the proceedings, Ivy was also shown arrested in two additional cases, in which she subsequently secured bail from the High Court.

With the latest Appellate Division ruling upholding her bail, legal experts say there is now no obstacle to her release from custody.
