Despite having his bail upheld in eight separate cases, an application has been filed to show former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque arrested in a new case involving attempted murder and the Explosives Act under Banani Thana. The investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam of Banani Thana, submitted the application on Thursday. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Sefatullah fixed July 6 for the hearing on the matter in the presence of the accused. As a result, his release from prison is not happening immediately.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police arrested Khairul Haque from his Dhanmondi residence on the morning of July 24 last year. That same night, he was sent to prison in connection with the murder case of Jubo Dal activist Abdul Kaiyum Ahad, who was killed in Dhaka's Jatrabari during the July movement. On July 29 of the same year, he was virtually shown arrested in two other cases under Fatullah and Bandar police stations in Narayanganj.

Subsequently, on July 30, he was shown arrested in a case filed with Shahbagh Thana over allegations of rendering corrupt, malicious, and illegal judgments, as well as forging judgments. Later, on September 10, he was shown arrested in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Later, on April 28, an Appellate Bench headed by the Chief Justice upheld Khairul Haque's bail in these five cases. However, following the bail orders, he was newly shown arrested on March 30 in the student Md. Arif murder case under Jatrabari Thana and the garment worker Rubel murder case under Adabor Thana. The High Court issued a rule and granted him interim bail in these two cases on May 12. When the state filed separate petitions seeking a stay on the bail, the Chamber Court of the Appellate Division upheld his bail in these two cases as well on May 20.

Meanwhile, on May 16, the investigating officer of the Khobaib murder case under Jatrabari Thana, Sub-Inspector Md. Ibrahim Khalil, applied to show Khairul Haque arrested in that case. Following a hearing in his presence on May 23, he was shown arrested. Afterward, on May 30, the High Court Bench of Justice K M Zahid Sarwar Kajal and Sheikh Abu Taher granted him bail along with a rule, which was later upheld by the Chamber Judge Court of the Supreme Court.

According to the details of the latest case in which the arrest application has been filed, demonstrators were protesting in front of the Mohakhali Setu Bhaban on the afternoon of August 4, 2024. While heading toward Shahbagh from there, they were attacked with gunshots, cocktails, and hand bombs. Around 25 to 30 people, including Uzzal Miah, were injured in the incident. Uzzal Miah later filed the case with Banani Thana as the plaintiff, alleging attempted murder and offenses under the Explosive Substances Act.
