Approval of additional international flights at Dhaka Airport temporarily suspended

Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has decided to temporarily suspend approvals for additional international passenger flights at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, citing mounting operational pressure and capacity constraints. The restriction will remain in effect until the airport's Third Terminal becomes fully operational.

In a recent directive issued to 38 airlines operating in Bangladesh, CAAB said the airport's existing infrastructure is already operating close to its maximum capacity.

Allowing more international flights at this stage could further strain airport operations.

Currently, Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport handles an average of 140 to 160 international flights and 125 to 140 domestic flights each day. In addition, 10 to 16 international cargo flights, along with private helicopters and other aircraft, bring the daily average to around 316 aircraft movements. The growing traffic has put significant pressure on the runway, taxiways, terminal facilities, aerobridges, check-in counters, immigration services and baggage handling systems.

According to the directive, foreign airlines without an operational base in Bangladesh will not be granted permission to operate scheduled passenger flights beyond their approved frequencies or timetables until the Third Terminal is fully commissioned. CAAB also clarified that any previously allocated airport slot should not be considered as operational approval.

Officials believe the temporary measure will help maintain smooth airport operations, improve passenger services and reduce congestion while preparations continue for the full launch of the Third Terminal. Once the new terminal is fully operational, the authority is expected to review the restriction.
