Army given magistracy power to control law and order: Law Adviser
The interim government of Bangladesh on Tuesday (September 17) granted magisterial and policing powers to the Bangladesh Army across the country, including the capital. The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification in this regard. This decision will be effective for the next two months from Tuesday.
As a result, if any crime is committed in presence of the army officers during duty of executive magistrate, they can arrest or order the arrest of the criminal.
Regarding the matter, Dr. Asif Nazrul, Hon’ble Adviser for Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and Ministry of Cultural Affairs explained the position of the government.
Dr. Asif Nazrul said, currently we have noticed that some activities like vandalism, anarchy and destroying the stability of the country are happening in some areas, especially in the industrial areas. The army has been given the power of magistracy to improve the situation and to prevent all these inactions, to deal with them.
He said, we believe that there will be no misuse of the army in carrying out its duties. Hopefully, if the situation improves, there will be no need for the army to perform this duty.
